Wine Season is near, Winexpert specialty chocolate port kits, Mead Day and Morning Shade Farms Blueberries

Lots of wine season excitement!

Wine Season is rapidly approaching, and growers and winemakers are prepping for the busy season. Leo dropped in on a grower in the Umpqua Valley, and was impressed with the plentiful, tight clusters of Sangiovese grapes hanging heavy on the vines. It looks to be a great start to the season for this grape. This vineyard is on a latitude matching almost perfectly with that of Tuscany, Italy; the premier growing region for this variety. Its bold tannin and rich color make it a key component for the ever popular super-Tuscan blend and we are excited to take advantage of this wonderful blending grape. We are currently taking pre-orders for these and other great varietals of wine grapes. Grapes are available in 100 pound increments, which will make 5-6 gallons of wine.

Don’t forget to sign-up for our Wine From Grapes class, offered on two days only: Saturday, September 14th and the following Saturday, September 21st. Space is filling up fast. Topics include but not limited to: selecting/sourcing quality fruit, selecting varietals, equipment usage, sulphite usage, measuring and adjusting pH / acidity, the details of fermentation, malo-lactic fermentation and troubleshooting. Space can be reserved for $60 per person.

Wine-kit makers have cause for excitement too. The positively decadent Chocolate Raspberry Port and Chocolate Orange Port wine ingredient kits are once again available in limited quantities.

A description of the raspberry version from Winexpert:

Bursting with rich, intense flavours and aromas, has traditional Port character of warm, rounded cherry and plum, supported by a racy zing of bright raspberry. Perfumed and gently tart with luscious liquid chocolate, beguiling with dark, bittersweet aromas of coffee and vanilla. Toasty hints of oak guide the way to a long, rich finish. Excellent within three months, this wine will age gorgeously—if you can keep any that long!

Food pairings: Delicious on its own or with any dessert, or serve with toasted nuts or shortbread.
Oak: Toasted Sweetness: 7 Body: Full Alcohol by volume: 15% – 16.5%

Pre-orders are due in by August 1st this year. If you don’t want to miss out, shoot us an email at info@fhsteinbart.com, or give us a call at 503-232-8793 and reserve your kit. No deposit required.

National Mead Day

As you probably know by now, F.H. Steinbart Co. is a hub for the harvest season community, events and all things fermentation. We have a very full schedule of classes, demonstrations, and general celebration coming up. For the dates of these informative and fun events keep an eye on our event calendar (found here: http://www.fhsteinbart.com/events.html ). The next celebration coming up is the American Home brewers Association’s Mead Day on Saturday, August 3rd. We have an exciting day planned with home brewed mead sampling, varietal honey tasting, a mead making demonstration, and an informative seminar with Blue Dog meadery of Eugene, OR. This event is FREE to attend and everyone is invited (21 and up for mead sampling, of course).

A Great Deal on Fruit!

We have gotten wind of an additional opportunity for fruit wine makers, a great price on juice quality blueberries. Morning Shade Farms (their info here: www.canby.com/morningshade ) is offering super sweet, juice quality blueberries for $1.20 per pound, down from $1.50. They are also offering to drop off the berries for pick-up at F.H. Steinbart Co. to make a one-stop pick-up for all your fruit wine and fermentation needs. These berries are perfectly suited and priced for fermentation purposes , and we can of course guide you through the process every step of the way. These berries are also available for pick-up at the farm. Contact the farm at 503-651-2622 to arrange your order / request.
